Basilisk: a Saqlawiyah Jidraniyah of the marbat of al-Dirri of the Qumusah section of the Saba'ah foaled in the possession of 'Abd al-Qadir of Deyr, purchased by Mr. J.H. Skene, H.M.'s Consul at Aleppo, for Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt and imported in 1879 to England by the Blunts. Light grey with 4 black hooves, a few fleabitten and some patches of pink. Basilisk's sire was a bay Saqlawi Jedran Basilisk's dam was a white Saqlawiyah Jedraniyah stolen by Faris Assaat from the desert. Neddi Ibn Ed Derri had sold the dam of BASILISK on shares to an Abadat (Sebaa Anazeh) from whom she was stolen by Faris Asaat. He in turn sold the mare to Abd El Jadir of Deyr, on the Euphrates River, in whose possession BASILISK was foaled. In England at Crabbet Stud, BASILISK was at first used frequently as a saddle mare, sometimes ridden by Lady Anne sidesaddle. She was used for hunting and may have been driven too. Lady Anne said of Basilisk: great power , up to any weight (the same as Azrek), wiry legs though not large below the knee, very fine shoulder, drooping quarters but tail carried like a feather in the air, good head and small muzzle. "Basilisk has something of the compact wiriness of a wild animal". Source : (Al Khamsa & The Crabbet Arabian Stud by Archer-Pearson-Covey) Her dam line is still existents in Europe and in USA.
